Handicrafts of Asia is probably a misnomer: Asia is just to big and
varied to be covered by one site. It is probably more correct to
say Southeast Asia or Indochina as this is where most of these
handicrafts have come from. Indochina has a recorded history that
goes back more than 2500 years and over that time geographic areas
have become renowned for certain types of handicraft. Handicrafts
generally arose from age-old village realities and the rites
associated with birth, death, and the seasonal cycle of crop
cultivation. Each item reflects the life, culture and spirit of the
area because each village produces wares which reflect the life of
people in that village and the local availability of raw materials.
